I think Van Gogh was colorweak (2)

I think Van Gogh was colorweak (2)

In December 2005, the "NPO Hokkaido Color Universal Design Organization (Hokkaido CUDO)" was established, and I also participated as one of the founders, as a color blind person. From that time, there was a opinion that Van Gogh was color-blind. When I talked about "color universal design" at a gathering of creators in 2008, I showed pictures of Van Gogh on a slide and said, "Maybe Van Gogh might have been colorweak." When I talked to the creators at the social gathering afterwards, I noticed that "the vantage point of Van Gogh" seemed to be different between them and me, who were color-blind. When I checked the slides again, there was a considerable difference between the picture of "Sunflower" and the picture of "Night Cafe Terrace".

Simply put
For the majority of color vision users, they felt Van Gogh's paintings had no depth, and for P-type weaknesses, there was not much discomfort and a sense of depth.

Apparently, for the majority of the C-types, Van Gogh was perceived as "a painter who paints flat and bold colors."

This time I will write about those two pieces.

At first "sunflower"
For the C-type, the background and the sense of depth of the sunflower body are not felt much. Rather, the color of the background comes forward and there is a sense of incompatibility. I can't feel the sunflowers overlapping each other. However, for me with P-type weakness, it looks normal without much discomfort.

Sunflowers were simulated in a P-type using the "calibration function" that is standard in ADOBE's Photoshop. However, with this processing method, when you see the C type, you can not feel the three-dimensional feeling nor the depth just because the vividness is lost.

Next, "Night Cafe Terrace"

This picture looks quite bright when the C-type is seen, and it looks like "daytime". However, I, who has weak P-type, has a night atmosphere, the lizard is clearly visible, and there is a sense of depth. If you look closely, you will notice that the "woman in a red dress at the center right back" is very conspicuous, and the color of the green tree on the right is as vivid as a daytime hue. Also, from the yellow in the center to the orange is too bright and it seems that the whole is illuminated. There are several places in this picture where red is treated as a “lizard”. The shade of the pillar at the entrance of the left hand is red, and red is used for the stone pavement at the bottom right, but the part that can be seen as a `` lizard '' to me of P type has `` bright red '' for C type people It seems to be used boldly. It is a very bright light color for the C type, but it looks like a deep “night cafe terrace” for me of the P type.

This is also a P-type simulation with the “calibration function” that is standard in Photoshop. But I thought the people of C type could'nt  feel the depth. Maybe they felt It just a dark one.

At that time, the color-blind experience glasses "Variantall" from Ito Optical Co. were popular, and the creators seemed to be excited and excited to say "Oh, the blue and yellow are vivid" or "The world looks different".

I felt uncomfortable at that time and kept thinking, "Can I somehow prove Van Gogh color-blind?"
